A Quick Guide to Installing your New Toilet

Part of getting your new bathroom ready to use is installing toilets and it’s not as difficult as you might think. In today’s article, we are going to quickly discuss how toilets are installed and how you need to get the job done. Don’t worry, it isn’t hard.

Step 1: Install the Closet Bolts on your Toilets

The first step that you need to take is installing the closet bolts on your toilet, and this applies to modern toilets as well. There are two different types of closet bolts that you could be using:

Flange Bolts

These slide right into the flange and will need to be placed parallel to the wall behind the toilet.

Floor Bolts

This is the most common type of bolt and they will screw right into the floor. When you are installing a new toilet, feel free to replace the old bolts.

Step 2: Install the Wax Ring

Two-piece toilets, one-piece toilets, and eco friendly toilets alike all share one thing in common: they make use of a wax ring. The wax ring should be installed with the tapered end nearest to the toilet and it should be placed on the waste horn. When you are installing this piece, you have a choice: you could let the wax ring warm up, or you could install it cold if you have just brought it in from outside. You will find, however, that a warm wax ring is more pliable and much easier to work with.

Step 3: Get the Toilet Into Place

This part is simple: You place the toilet on the flange and install the retainer nuts/washers. Once done, you can tighten the closet bolt nuts but do make sure you alternate from side to side so you can evenly distribute the pressure. Finally, you can place the bolt cap, which keeps the bolts themselves from collecting moisture and makes your toilet look a little big nicer for you and any guests that you might have.

If you are installing once piece toilets then congratulations, you’re done! If you have two pieces however you will need to install the toilet tank and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Remember that with two-piece toilets, it really is different per model, so pay attention!

Installing your toilet is a crucial part of your bathroom renovation, so make sure you do it right, and that it will work properly for many years to come.
